Ed graduated with a BA in playwriting and poetry from Empire State College in Rochester, New York. His graduate degree was in American Studies, with an emphasis in American and African American theatres. He studied acting under the renowned director Jasper Deeter at the Hedgerow Theatre in Philadelphia, and at the famed HB Studio in New York with Herb Berghof and William Hickey. He has performed off-Broadway and at many regional theatres around the country.
Ed also has an extensive career in academe. He was a full Professor at the State University of New York, Buffalo and has also taught at Florida State University, UCLA, Mount Holyoke College and Wayne State University in Detroit. He has developed and taught courses on the history and dramatic literature of African American Theatre. He is an award-winning director whose productions have received critical acclaim from regional theatres across the USA, Canada and the West Indies. Ed was the founder of a small theatre in Buffalo, New York, and co-founder of a theatre in Toronto, Canada. He was an Associate Artistic Director for three years at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and is currently serving as the Artistic Director at Jubilee Theatre in Fort Worth, Texas.
